RWE plans to build a hydrogen-compatible gas-fired power plant in Voerde
RWE has announced plans to build a modern, hydrogen-compatible gas-fired power plant with an output of around 850 MW on the site of the former power station in Voerde. The investment is crucial for Germany’s long-term energy security and will play an important role in supporting the phase-out of coal.
The German federal government has announced that it will soon introduce regulations for tenders related to the construction of hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants. RWE is preparing to participate in these tenders and, if awarded a contract, declares that it will immediately begin construction in Voerde.
Strategic importance of the location
The planned power plant would allow Voerde to remain an important energy generation site, thus supporting the country’s energy transition. The location offers excellent infrastructure — the former power station site lies directly on the planned hydrogen core network pipeline. As a result, the city and the region would benefit from secure jobs and increased local value creation.
Project implementation and timeline
In 2024, RWE commissioned an American-Spanish consortium consisting of GE Vernova and Técnicas Reunidas to develop the project design and build the hydrogen-compatible gas-fired power plant. The consortium prepared the approval documentation based on proven technologies.
According to current plans, the Voerde plant could begin producing electricity in 2030. Once operational, the facility will be capable of running on a fuel mix containing at least 50% hydrogen, which is an important step toward eventual full hydrogen operation.
RWE emphasizes that a fast approval process — including early public participation — will be essential for the project to start quickly if the company wins the tender.
